Donation Description: One professional editorial evaluation of a novel proposal by John Douglas.

Specifications: Up to fifty pages of manuscript text plus a short outline. The text should be the first 50 pages of the book and should be double-spaced, measured as “generous-sized” type, not less than 12 point, and on a page with margins not less than one inch on all sides. Figure about 250 words to the page and therefore a total of about 12,500 words altogether. Outline of no more than 3-5 pages of single-spaced type with, otherwise, same type specifications as for the main text. Electronic submission preferred, provided that the type specifications are followed as described.

Evaluation: Pass/fail evaluation of commercial viability according to editorial instinct and market knowledge. Comments on writing style, character development, plotting, structure, etc. intended to highlight both strengths and weaknesses and to point the way for improvement. A sample edit of the first few pages of text to show critical assessment of word choice, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. Summary commercial advice in terms of potential markets as known to the editor who is not currently in an acquisition position but who spent more than twenty years with four different publishers, during which time he acquired an estimated 700-800 titles in many different fiction and non-fiction categories. Editor still regularly gets paid to evaluate novel proposals so his skills are in good order. No punches pulled.
